The Ellison Elementary School learning community is located on the unceded traditional territory of the Syilx Okanagan people.

We feel so fortunate to learn and play in this beautiful location.

Central Okanagan Public Schools has developed a strategic plan with input from partner groups. Ellison Elementary School is working to align to the strategic plan as we support equity, wellbeing, family engagement and transformative leadership in our school.

System Wellbeing

A working group of teachers at Ellison Elementary School have delved deeper into the learning of the social emotional needs of our students. We are using the book "Kid's These Day's" by Dr. Jody Carrington to support our learning and conversations around moving forward to ensure a connection to the school and a feeling of value and support for each and every ELE learner.

Equity and Excellence in Learning

On Implementation Day all Ellison Elementary staff were able to engage in learning with Anona Kampe learning about the Syilx creation story and the four food chiefs. During this learning we were able to engage more deeply in an understanding of how the four food chiefs connect to our learning at ELE, and to the Syilx land at ELE. We made connections to the the First People's Principle's of Learning and how that relates to local Syilx teachings and culture. Using this learning and connection to Anona Kampe, we have been able to continue our teaching and learning for students to support a better tomorrow in our journey of truth and reconciliation.  Anona has conitnued to visit our school and support our classes with lessons on the four food chiefs.

Family & Community Engagement

Ellison Elementary school is proud to have established online learning portfolios for every classroom and every learner at ELE this year. Assessment for learning has come a long ways in education and families are invited to share in the learning journey of their child by engaging, supporting and reflecting on that learning together with them using Freshgrade or Class Dojo. Students and teachers are continuously updating the learning portfolios with up to date reflections of children learning and progress.

Ellison Elementary has work hard to ensure a safe environment throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. We were excited to be able to engage our community with the Remembrance Day assesmbly outside on the ELE field this year.

Transformative Leadership

School leaders at ELE continue to support transformative leadership by modeling themselves as lead learners. The school principal and a teacher leader are enrolled in the "Leading Learning" course through Harvard Certificate in School Management and Leadership. Through this process we continue to look at how to align to the Central Okanagan Public Schools Strategic Plan and support the overarching goal: Our learners will develop foundational skills and core curricular competencies so that they can be empowered to follow their passions and stengths and thrive holistically as resilient and engaged global citizens.

Ellison Elementary school leaders continue to scan our community by utilizing the Spirals of Inquiry model. The data that we collect from the scanning process that includes students, parents, staff and stakeholders allows us to formulate our school goals and direction.
